First Female Entrepreneur

Ft. Frederica, St. Simons Island, Georgia
The first female entrepreneur in Georgia was Mrs. Anne Harris, the widow of William Harris, Clerk of Savannah who died in 1737. She set up a mercantile business in Fort Frederica and not only succeeded in shipping goods up and down the coast, but raised a son and kept her mother.  Her story, which stretches through the land grant records, colonial deeds and wills, is told on Georgia Pioneers under "Biographies", available to members.  The family is traced back to England and includes Georgia descendants.
